I want to use my new-er chevy alternator on my pontiac motor. They are exactly the same except hole placement on the back of the case for a rear support bracket. The chevy has a hole (even though it doesn't use a rear bracket), but the hole is 180 degrees from where the pontiac hole is. Now I have to use a broken 40 year old pontiac alternator.

Time to make some "modifications"
Or find someone with good fabrication skills.

Can't you drill a new hole through the metal? If not I think you could still weld a little support thingy to it. Maybe you could try to use the housing of the old one with the internals of the newer one?

check around town for a starter / alternator shop and see if they will swap the chevy out or put your internals in a different case .

Pictures?
You should be able to "clock" the alternator so that things line up the way you need them to.

I am just going to run the chevy alternator without the rear bracket. Most restored trans ams have done away with the rear bracket, I'm thinking it may have been a 2-barrel manifold exclusive bracket (my motor use to have a 2bbl carb).
